The numbers apply to both men and women, but they are not foolproof. Some very muscular people may have a high BMI without health risks. A waist size that is larger then 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women means an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and other health conditions no matter what your BMI.

To calculate BMI using metric measurements simply requires the following formula.
BMI = weight in kg divided by (height X height)
For example a person weighs 58 kg and is 1.77 m tall.

BMI = 58 divided by (1.77 X 1.77) BMI = 18.7 This individual is in their proper weight range
